Patchouli is a bushy herb in the mint family that grows about two to three feet tall. However, there are many plants in the mint family that smell nothing like mint – patchouli is one of them. Patchouli is a fixative oil, meaning that if it is used in small amounts it can boost the scent of other oils it is blended with. Patchouli oil has the reputation of being a love-it-or-hate-it oil. Patchouli incense was widely used in the 1960’s, which is why it has been given the reputation as the “hippie scent”.
