Our Holy Death candle was created for those of you who wish to honor, pray to, and petition Santa Muerte. Santa Muerte is a female deity or folk saint in Mexican and Mexican-American folk Catholicism. A personification of death, she is associated with healing, protection, and safe delivery to the afterlife by her devotees. Some other names she goes by are: Lady of Shadows, Lady of Night, White Lady, Black Lady, Skinny Lady, The Godmother, and Bony Lady. You may also see her referred to as Santísima Muerte, which is translated as “Most Holy Death” or “Most Saintly Death”, and devotees often call her Santisma Muerte during their rituals.
The two most common objects that Santa Muerte holds in her hands are a globe and a scythe. The scythe can symbolize the cutting of negative energies or influences. As a harvesting tool, a scythe may also symbolize hope and prosperity. Her scythe can also represent the moment of death, when it is said to cut a silver thread. The scythe has a long handle, indicating that it can reach anywhere. The globe represents Death’s vast power and dominion over the earth, and may be seen as a kind of a tomb to which we all return.
Santa Muerte is known for being accepting and an enforcer of justice. But she does not always deliver in the way you might expect and can be vengeful and destructive if she sees fit. Part of following The Bony Lady is the acceptance of death and the fact that we all must die one day. This acceptance brings power and perspective, allowing us to live each day as if it were our last.
She likes offering of tobacco, copal, flowers, sweet breads, and candy. Always leave a bowl of water out for her.
This candle is made with a propriety blend of essential oils that also contains tobacco and copal. I steep the herbs in the hot wax, then strain the wax. Some herbs are added to the top of the candles. All candles are made with real essential oils. I make all candles in small batches of 3-6 candles at a time.
After the candles have cooled, they are placed on my altar for blessing. Candles are infused with Reiki healing energy. As a Shaman, I bless them and ask Spirit to empower them for their intended purpose. – Doctor Bastian
